Aunt Vivian became a teacher until she married in 1924. Once she married she was not allowed to teach. If you would like to know more about Vivian, you can find her table of contents for her posts on the PAGE at the top of this blog under Ronald and Grace McDonald her parents.
Years later they removed the marriage restrictions and she returned to teaching. I believe she started in Mica, a town south of Spokane in Washington State. She later moved to the school in Greenacres, in the Spokane Valley of Washington. After the death of her husband Hilary, she moved to Seattle and took up teaching in the south Seattle area such as White Center.
Here are some photos among her possessions for you to enjoy.
The first is Mica, a school 12 miles southeast of Spokane’s downtown area on State Route 27:
Mica Grade School, 1948 to 1949
On the back of the photo is a list of names: The first 5 Vivian couldn’t remember their names, she starts with Bill Keller, — Albricht, Jimmy, Jim Albricht, Sallie, Boby Olmstead, Butel Keller, Larry Woodgeard, Deona Kopp, Barbara Brown, 3rd: Larry Olbricht, Gordon Allen, Wendell, Jerry Olmstead, —- Mickey Olmstead, Jim Walker. I have tried to read her handwriting but I can’t always tell the letter she is meaning.
Mica in Grade School in 1949-1950, Vivian is at the back the second one in on the left.

Mica in 1950 to 1951, Vivian is on the upper left of the photo. By the way my Aunt Vivian was about 4 ft 11 inches. She was not tall but she was a good teacher and cared for her students.

This is the Mica School in 1951 to 1952 and Vivian is on the right second one in.
Unfortunately she did not write any names on the back of the photo above.
Here we have the Mica School covering 1952 to 1953 1 to 5th grade:
Back Row: Jerry Morelock, Ronald Keller, Bobby Kopp, Gordon Allen, Jimmy Walker, Dwain Scott, Jerry Nelson, Mary Jane Walker, John Phillips, Rhoda Stark, Charlotte Keller, Mike Lane, Linda Keller, Mike.
Here are a few other photos that might be of interest but no names are given:
About 1953 Vivian moves to another school called Greenacres in the Spokane Valley, near where her home was located. The school was very convenient and just down the block from her house. Vivian is on the far right in the plaid dress.
Back Row: Mr. Holt, Freddie Charton, Edward Larsen, Raymond Lieri, Tommy Hasse, Clif McLean, John Burnett, Riley Reilly, Pam Anderson, Elwa Rainwter, Kristie Bowernman, Pam Crandall, Sharon Chance, Patty Martin, Ardella Groff, Donna Daughtery, Tommy Barker, 3rd row, Harley Gordon, Larry Bast, David Steward, Harold Nelson, Butch Wilson, Jim Snyder, Betty J. Ramm, Sharon Randall, Elaine Thomas, Janet Higby, Anita Larango. She left her name off this one.
In 1953 the Greenacres School gathered the faculty and my Aunt Vivian wrote down their names:
Back Row LtoR? Mrs. Quinton, Dorothy Devlin, Mrs. Campbell, Mrs. Grubler, Mr. Schultz, Chuck Sales, Mrs. Shane, Isabell Melvile, Mrs. Allen, Mrs. Hughes, Francis Wilson.
Front row: M. Kiblen, Edithe Peters, Blanche Roller, Grace Severano, Norma Patterson, Patty Love, Lois Iler, Vivian McKanna (front row second from left seated) and Mr. Holt.
After the death of her husband Hilary McKanna in November of 1957, Vivian decided to migrate to Seattle, Washington and she took up residence next door to her sister Eddie. They had a house which was split into two apartments that they shared for many years till Vivian couldn’t take care of herself anymore. It was on Alki Beach in West Seattle and it has been replaced by a big apartment house.
Based on her Department of Education file, she was teaching in the Highline School District by 1959 (South Seattle) at this time and I think she mislabeled these photos. They should read Seattle not Greenacres. You can tell they are the same class based on what is on the bulletin board in the back of the room. Vivian did not write on the back and list the names on these photos.
Vivian worked at the White Center School. Here are the students from grade 2 covering the years 1968 to 1969:
Top: Yale Greenwood, Dawn Salesbury, Shelly Davis, Darlene Murphy, Chris Pazinska, Theresa Tarstenson, Rhonda Mikkleson, Joyce Odstrcie, Robbie Burns, James Catlett, LaLette Thurmond, Frances Mullins, Dean Preistly, Wanda Dubert, Roxanne Kirk, Wanda Kenney, Teresa Brandon, Rondale Sams, Kevin Denny, Jonathan Bratton Robbie Parrott, Mikkel McGhee, Lexie Bush.
It is very unusual to have group photos with the names written on the back, usually there is nothing to identify the persons in the photo. Here you will have to count because my Aunt did not really write out the names with rows in mind.
Enjoy these photos and if you have questions leave a comment and I will find you.
